I happened upon this: Dallas cops have issued 38 'no English' tickets over the last three years.
That led to me reading this.
Which led to me feeling like this.
I thought about commenting but I figured 'Hey, I am not lame and have figured out a better, more customizable outlet for my internet-rants. I'll blog it!'
And so here we are.
Now then, we all know that the English-only crowd is full of smart people. However, now and again, they say stupid things. Like in this comment thread.
To spare you, I'll summarize a little:
English Onlys-- Damn Mexicans! With their small brains and criminal tendencies! Learn some damn english if you want to be an American! I hate how they make us speak spanish or even have a spanish option in places! There is spanish tv, spanish ads, spanish on my ATMs! I once heard some Mexcians talking shit about me in Spanish, see? Don't you see how that makes them all evil?? Also, Spanish is being pushed down my throat and mescans are dumb. that is all.
Spanish is cools- Yall are racist. Sotomayor. Also, we are going to be the majority assholes! woo!
Reasoned thinkers- Tolerance.
Thrown in there is a bunch of regurgitated facts and spiels from [insert favorite talking head]. Lots of people trying to sound smart and instead sounding pitiful.
So here is the official position of the NTM: (until I decide to change it of course)
I believe that the world is a competitive place. From the plant trying to fight for sunlight to the d-bag fighting for bar-space. Limiting yourself to one set of skills is very dangerous when the rules of competition change rapidly. Thus, I think that if you only know Spanish and want to succeed past menial labor jobs here you had better improve your skill set. Like anything else, however, this is a choice and shouldn't be legislated. In fact, I encourage you to stagnate because it means a little less competition for me.
With that said, there are different levels of competition. Focusing on any one comp similarly puts you in a disadvantaged position. 'Those people' who come over and are railed against (that means those immigrants everyone hates) can surely be useful. Alas, people are afraid of change.
This really isn't about the language. Just like it wasn't about jobs, the american way, or any of the other bullshit that was spouted by congressmen --- in the 1800s --- when they were trying to hold back the Eastern Europeans.
So giving well-thought out reasons why spanish language options are in South Texas rather than say, Swahili, (because its near Mexico, where they speak Spanish not Swahili) is pointless. As is pointing out the reasons why there are Spanish entertainment options-channels and radio stations etc- (because that is what they want, and people want their money). You can tell them that it is neither good nor bad.
But they don't want to hear that. They just don't like the mescans.
And to those unreasonable fuckheads I say, ' Fuck You for hating me and people who look like me.'
And that is the end of it.
