On the State of the Mavericks

Full Disclosure and all that good shit: I am no Maverick fan. 

Shocking, I know. 

Back before they actually gave the Spurs some trouble (2006) I had a fondness for them at best. Same fondness I carried for say, TTech. I liked their style and kind of rooted for the underdog that was trying to win it all with offense. 

If the Spurs were not, I would be a Maverick fan. 

Sadly, after living in Dallas for college, and experiencing first hand the underbelly that is the Maverick bandwagon I am a lot closer to hating them than I am fond of them.

With that said, and my self-assigned responsibility to live up to my name: North Texas Mescan, I feel like I'll toss in my two completely unwanted cents into the vastness that is the internets:

I feel for you dude.

You get called soft all the damn time. I mean, damn, Chris Webber, he of choking fame, called you soft. Said he disrespected you. Like I said though, I feel for you. Spurs were called the same thing in the mid-90s. We Spur fans defended David Robinson the same way you guys defend Dirk. Dirk has an MVP, so does D-Rob. Dirk was called out for his team's failings, so was Dave. Dwyane Wade outshown Dirk in the 2006 Finals, and Dave got his ass handed to him in the '94 West Finals by Hakeem Olajuwon. 

So I see how you can defend a guy that has brought the team all the success it has had, but has also been part of the most heartbreaking losses you have endured. 

I get it. 

The Spurs got lucky -- Dave Robinson especially-- when Timmy D came to town. No one denies this, least of all Dave. Unfortunately I don't see any of that coming around the corner for you, buddy. 

What to do?

This is a funny question to pose because, as a fan, you can't do much but watch. So what the hell do the Mavericks do? Well Cubes likes to make splashes, although not always smart splashes.  Eh. Even with Dampier's unwarranted monster contract, Dallas has still reached the Finals and won a shitton of games these last four years. Normally at this stage of a franchise player's career you have two options: Blow it up or Load-up for the last year or two. 

The Spurs, for example, did the Load Up option. They went out and spent cash to get RJ The Disappointer. 

You guys on the other hand, are always spending cash. Kidd? Damp? Looks like you guys just didn't spend it wisely. So maybe it is time to Blow it Up. 

Scary huh? Yeah. Maybe you opt for a smart blow up. Problem is that I don't know what that is. It is never fun to build for the future. You just never know what that means. 

Also, I hate to say that I don't like to say I told you so. Cuz I did tell you so.
