Musings on the College Football Weekend

Texas Tech looks monstrous. They have a really good team. North Texas does not. They have no defense and a very mediocre offense. They play horrible, horrible defense. One and two play drives are common there. I’ll leave it at that. We all know that. So much for progress, huh?. USC is looking mistake prone. You can see flashes of unstoppableness, then they have a mistake that will set them back, even though the kicked Oregon's ass. Vandy looked solid on D. Then again Auburn isn’t exactly a juggernaut on offense.

Back to Tech. They can score at will. You can usually tell a good team from a great team by looking at the scores. The last few years Tech looked good, but not great on offense. You couldn’t tell from the stats though. I mean when a guy throws for 300 yards, it looks like he had a great game. But the 400 Harrell threw today? Those were easy yards. Its not as if K-State didn’t try or anything. They were throwing everything they had at them. That offense though is too good, too experienced. They have an answer for everything. In theory, all offenses have an answer for everything. It all comes down to execution, however. Now, they may not look so good against the other title contenders in the big 12, though. Here’s is what makes me think they will though: they don’t rely on one or two guys like in previous years. Early on in Leach’s tenure there, they relied on the quirkiness of the offense. It surprised a lot of people because of its foreignness. Now, everyone runs a version of the spread. It isn’t so quirky anymore. Last year they relied on Crabtree. Dude was phenomenal and played out of his mind.  From what I saw today, they have four to five real threats on that team. You cannot sit on Crabtree and dare the other guys to beat you with any success. I think they are a legit top ten. No overrated team in Lubbock.

Texas handled Colorado in the first half. They didn’t look so good doing it though. I say chalk it up to the elevation. Colorado teams have an advantage that way. You can never walk in there and kick ass if they are any kind of decent. There will always be an adjustment period.
