Reviews!

For about two months now, I have been trying to get into comics. I started by looking into the story lines of some of the major, big-tyme characters out there (Batman etc) so I knew what the hell was going on when I read the book. It's going good. I've got a couple titles that I like, and a few that I am checking out. So, here are some I picked up today:

Logan #2:

I know I am jumping into this review without going over the first issue, but hey- deal with it. We start out by picking up where we left off. Logan/Wolverine/James Howlett is fighting the fire-dude we saw at the end of last issue. He has flash backs to when he was in WWII spending time with local girl. I am not one for spoiling so I'll let you read the rest on your own.

Thoughts:

I like the art. Eduardo Risso does a Frank Miller impression here (sort of). There is good use of shadows to create mood and effect. Some of the line work is a little quirky- sometimes you pause and think that Wolverine looks a little weird , or that the chick's mouth is shaped funny- but that is cool. He balances it out with some really bad ass shots of Logan looking pretty, well, bad ass.

Cable #2:

We start out at the diner and Cable is bleeding from his gunshot wounds. Bishop flashes back and we are showed how he found Cable and the baby, and also how he got his really huge robot arm. Then, we are left with a lame cliffhanger.

Thoughts:

I don't like the art. It is cool that it is realistic, but there is no movement. Everyone looks really real- and stiff. Also, we are treated to the third retelling of final scene where Xavier gets shot in the head, and Bishop gets his arm eaten. This is also the third time where things change. Each time someone was standing somewhere different, wearing something different, or they were a different color ( in the case of Predator X ). The problem is that two of the changes were in the last two issues. They aren't big problems or even problems, just more like annoyances. The story is half-way decent but the art is very distracting. It looks like the digital cartoons did back when they were first experimenting with digital art. Combine that with stiff-looking guys with action scenes that have no action, and you don't get a very good book.

Dark Tower: The Long Road Home 2 of 5
:

We continue on with the Story of Roland Deschain. I won't get into much of a review of the story here because it won't make too much sense. You really have to pick up either the book by Steven King, or the collection of the Gunslinger Born to understand it.

Thoughts:

Well, I like the story. It is a little meandering. I haven't read the book so I can't compare it to that. I can however tell you that I like the art. It is weird but cool. The coloring is awesome. It is also very wordy. I like it. I will not go into more as it will make no sense to you whatsoever.

Secret Invasion #1:

Okay. I will not ruin this for you. I'm sure you can read somewhere what went down.

Thoughts:

Amazing. Could you ask for a book that has more than this? The chick at the comic shop was raving about this when we went. I had thought before about picking this up, but since I am not all that into crossovers and huge story arcs, this wasn't very high on my list. Since I am not too familiar with all the characters in the Marvel Universe I doubted I would get all the references to past books and Easter eggs hidden amongst dialogue in issue whatever last year. I was surprised that this was entertaining. The art is good, the story is compelling, and the pacing is amazing. I wish I had been reading Marvel for a lot longer so I could pick up on some of the references to things past; it would have made this book that much more enjoyable. As it is, however, it still is a must read.
