The football team has completed their season. They finished with only one win, and eleven losses. I have already talked about what I think needs to be done. All responses have been something to the effect of "Well, what about that thing you have already addressed?"
So, I won't rehash anything here.
BUT, I know that football is king. It makes the most money, and commands the most attention. Given the option, I would choose a winning football team to a winning basketball team at NT. It is what it is.
Having said that, the basketball team, which plays tonight coming off an embarassing loss to Houston, is the only one of the two major teams here to have a realistic shot at winning a national title.
Yes, I know; you didn't realize that either 'til just now. It is true, though. UNT could, in theory, win the 'Belt. That means an auto-berth in Da Tourney. All they have to do then, is win out. Voila. National Championship. One shining moment and all that.
Really, a deep run would make the squad legends forever more. Imagine if this team went to the sweet sixteen? Imagine if they knocked off a team like Duke? Crazy pub for good 'ol UNT.
The football team? Well they would have to pull an upset in one of those money-games they play at the beginning of the year. You know, against LSU, or Texas etc. Even if they did that, it would be more like, "What is wrong with Big Name School?" rather than, "Wow, UNT is awesome-ness incarnate!" You know it is true.
The biggest downside I could think of is that the Super Pit would be filled with fair-weather fans from then on. They would go to the games just because it is the thing to do. They don't know much about basketball, they are playing with their hair, or texting when something important is happenning. Real fans would either be priced out, or just not get in.
But, I would accept those things for a NC.
Go Mean Green.
Huh. I guess I've never thought about it like that.
