Instead of listing why I don't like it, let me tell you how I would do it and why.
Stack 'em up:
Putting all the games on one day makes the whole day an event. Who doesn't like events? You can rack up even more money from advertising by raising the rates through the roof. People will be watching the games that suck (whatever.com bowl, Generic Sponser bowl, Second and Third Teir Bowls) while getting ready for the games that matter (BCS, good matchups). You probably get more worthwile (to ad guys) viewers this day than on Tuesday night.
Now I guess I'll point out here that some of these bowls benefit by being the only game on TV during the week. I'll also point out that people only have so much room for football.
Blasphemy, I know.
Seriously, though. You can only get up for one or two 'event' games at a time. Joe Football Fan has the playoffs, the BCS games, and maybe one or two smaller bowls to spread out the event juices for. Trust me. I know.
As much as I would like to have people over and go all out for each game, I can't. Especially the tuesday night games with no-name schools. I get home from work, and the wife wants time, dogs need to be walked, dinner eaten, etc. A bowl game between Ball St. and Tulsa gets regulated to Sportscenter highlights. Really though, I might just check the score online and let that be it.
That brings me back to my point. New Years Day is an event day. You get everyone together and watch football all day. It's like the first round of the Tourney. Wall to wall football!
If you can't see why that is beneficial to ad guys, I'll lay it out for ya:
Big Games- The BCS bowls, start early, end late. Using Central time here, I would go 11-Sugar, 2-Rose, 5-Orange, 8-Fiesta.
Actually, I would go back to having the bowl host the game, instead of the site hosting the game. It would still work being a week later.
Okay. So what about the other games? Welll, since ESPN does all those, it can do those the same way, on its multitude of channels. Game after game.
What if you miss something awesome? Have one ESPN be all highlights of the games. Really, I would probably watch just that channel because I wouldn't miss anything. See how espn 2 could get its highest ratings ever? Or espnnews? Or espn 360?
Or, Double Stack 'em.
Instead of all on New Years Day, you play the games on the Eve, and the Day. You put lesser bowls on the 31st and BCS bowls on the 1st.
Everyone will make a shit-ton of money. All those bars, restaurants, grocery stores, electronic stores will be banking. ESPN will be raking it in. The ad guys would have a mini-superbowl size audience for two days.
Okay, on to the Fiesta Bowl:
Texas vs Ohio State
I remember back when Texas upset Nebraska in that classic Big XII title game. I also remember they went on to the Fiesta Bowl to get murdered by Penn State. Fast forward a couple of years and I remember Ohio State beating down on Notre Dame, and everyone hyping them for the Nat'l Title game the next year there. They made all kinds of comparisons to Vince and co. at the Rose Bowl the year before. I also remember the next year Florida humiliated them
So those are my Fiesta Bowl Memories.
Hey, did Tennessee beat Florida State at the Fiesta Bowl at the first BCS Championship game in Tempe?
Sorry, got distracted. Texas should brutalize these guys. A freshman quarterback with limited weapons? Do we really believe that Texas cannot slow down these guys when they handled the offensive powerhouses in the Big 12 this year? Don't we remember that Penn St. beat these guys. The same Penn St. that was bullied by USC?
Texas and its best player in particular have a chip on their shoulder. The team because they are not playing in South Florida on Thursday and the Colt because he didn't win the Heisman. Don't think so? Then you probably don't remember Vince Young screaming "Who da real Heisman now?" after the '06 Rose Bowl. I know McCoy isn't Vince, but he is human.
UT has an outside chance for a split National Title. That is the coolest thing about tonight. It is also the biggest hurdle. There is a very real chance that Texas tries to do too much and makes silly mistakes.
If they lose, I think that is the only reason why.
