Vizza, UNT, Dodge, and other Musings

There is a lot of talk on the Mean Green message board about the direction of the football program. If you haven't been keeping up with the situation, besides sucking, the team looks like it does not like its coach. That is my opinion, by the way. When you have so many guys quit and/or transfer it makes people wonder. I don't wonder, though.

As excited as I was about PapaDodge when he came in to Denton, is as unsure as I am now about his ability to lead a team. It seems obvious now that the clout he had before is gone or lost on this group of collegiate guys. He has won championships and his offense was innovative ... at the high school level.

It has become apparent that he is unable or unwilling to modify the scheme to suit the talent on the roster. This is a coaching sin. It is career suicide. It is really not smart.

Perhaps it is stubbornness. Perhaps it is the players. We should wait and see.

Yes. I said he is sucking and that we should give him more time.

Why?

It is like this:

Because building a program takes time and a good luck, we must, as reasonable people, give him the requisite time and support to do his job.

Sure, some guys do it in one year. Some guys also graduate with a PHD at 18.
They didn't kick you out of school because you didn't do like super smart guy. After three years you have no excuse. You have recruited all the players. There should be progress. UNT need not be title contenders next year, but they need to show significant improvement beyond the 1 or 2 wins they have thus far accomplished.

Okay now. A word about the fans:

A big excuse touted by Dickey was that there was not enough support. As far as I know he was telling the truth. I don't know for sure. I was not here. I didn't even hear of UNT before my junior year in high school.

I will say this, though. As a student, I can only afford to support to an extent. I can only go to so many games. I can only buy so many shirts/hats/assorted crap. It is hard to justify an extremely high level of support when I get so little in return. Sure, I go here. Sure, I should root for them. No, I will not stay the whole way through for another 40 point blow out. The first one, I stayed for. The second, too. The ninth? No.

I realize that Dickey was talking about the admin, and the alumni. It makes little difference though. I am sure some of these same thoughts run through their minds when they see the performance of the team.

On the Vizza thing:

I am not happy that Gio Vizza left. I am hoping though, that BabyDodge can step in and live up to the hype that surrounded him in high school where he was decently recruited. I don't think that all of Gio's poor play was his fault alone. Just as his good play wasn't his sole acomplishment. I'll leave it at that.
